What's actually in season right now
Delhi summers are hard on people, but they're generous to fruit lovers. Mangoes lead the pack from April through July, followed closely by lychee's short, unmissable window in May-June. Watermelon and muskmelon show up as the heat peaks, doing exactly what they're built for — mostly water, intensely refreshing. Jamun (Indian blackberry) has its own brief moment in June, and if you know where to look, so does the humble but underrated phalsa.
The heat is the real challenge, not the season
The tricky part about summer produce isn't buying it — it's keeping it good once you're home. Delhi's daytime heat can turn a perfectly ripe mango overripe within hours if it's left on a countertop in direct sun. The fix is simple: keep fruit out of direct sunlight, ideally in the coolest corner of the kitchen, and only refrigerate once it's fully ripe (refrigerating unripe fruit stops the ripening process and can leave it starchy).
Fruit-by-fruit storage notes
Watermelon and muskmelon keep better whole than cut — once sliced, wrap tightly and refrigerate, and eat within a day or two. Lychee and jamun are best bought in small quantities and eaten within two to three days; they don't hold well no matter how you store them. Mangoes are the exception that rewards patience: a slightly firm mango left on the counter for a day or two will ripen further and often taste better than one bought already soft.
Buy less, buy often
The single best summer storage trick has nothing to do with your fridge: buy only what you'll eat in the next two to three days. Summer fruit is at its peak for a short window, and produce sitting in your kitchen doesn't stay at that peak for long, no matter where you store it. It's the same principle we use in-store — we'd rather restock every morning than hold large quantities in reserve.
Drop by for whatever's at its best this week — our buyers pick summer fruit for flavour, not for how long it can sit around.
